I look at a lot of books of hours and love the genre and the art. This one is not like the others. The art is distorted and painful looking but its still very beautiful and appropriate for the subject (the passion of Christ). I would recommend this for someone who has already enjoyed the Tres Riches Heures of the Duc de Berri and some of the other standards but does not mind looking at something different.Caveat: the anti-Semitism of the time comes across in the little vignettes from the moralized Bible that are part of this book; Jewish readers might like to be warned that this is part of what they will come across in this volume.
This book is chock full of gorgeous detailed full-page illuminated manuscripts from page-to-page. I can't say enough good things about this reproduction.

The reproductions here are very fine, including gold ink that shines well. As for the manuscript itself, while art critics often salivate over it nearly as much as the earlier Tres Riches Heures, I found myself slightly disappointed, mostly because of unreasonable expectation rather than any fault of the manuscript itself. It is indeed rather unique, one might say odd: it is highly conservative in style and not at all naturalistic... a sort of backlash against the rapid advances of illumination occurring throughout the period. While other Northern European illuminators of the period were experimenting with linear perspective and naturalistic landscapes, the Rohan Master instead focuses on emotion and dynamic compositions. We still see abstractly patterned skies, pink and blue buildings (a la Italian panel painting), chaotic perspective, and medieval Italianate landscapes that look more like whipped meringue than any hills in Europe. Keep in mind this thing dates to about 4 decades after the Tres Riches Heures. The figures are often quite elegant, on the other hand, and the drapery well-executed. Many of the faces are highly idiosyncratic, e.g. the pear-shaped ones of plates 81 and 83, bringing to mind the Westminster Retable or Douce Apocalypse of nearly 200 years earlier. Clothing is nicely modeled, but faces have a distinctly drawn quality, rather than a painted one. The text is variable in quality but better calligraphy can be found elsewhere. The smaller text blocks especially suffer, e.g. plate 101. The borders, too, are not very carefully drawn compared to contemporary scrolling-vine borders. There are some simple knots in the borders, for those of you interested in knot art. The main attraction then, is most definitely the miniatures.I think this is an important addition to an art book collection, but I believe this manuscript is a tad overrated. Someone with modernist tastes might appreciate it more than me. The main reason to have it is the elegant figures (some of them, at least), the highly original compositions, and the very high quality of the reproduction. The book is nicely bound in red cloth decorated in gold and comes with a dustjacket.
Facsimile of a Medieval Illuminated Manuscript. Printed in full color with lots of gold accents. Plates are numbered and described every few pages. This is a high quality art reproduction. Nothing like the "reprints" of old books being done now--actually photocopied now. Nice red cloth hardcover edition, jacketed in transparent art paper and sold in a slipcover.
