This book is an important read for kids AND adults. Excellent background info and "how-to's" that provide a great jumping-off point for young activists. I know it's been said already, but I definitely wish teenage me would have had this book to read. Well written and combines checklists, guides, and anecdotes that keep you engaged. Great to read through all at once and also to use as a reference.One of my favorite things was the tone - I felt like I was having a conversation with the author as opposed to being lectured at - which I feel is important for the target audience. I will definitely be getting copies for the young people in my life!

Wonderful book for this historical moment in our country. I’ve had the book sitting on my coffee table and both my older teen girls have picked it up and started reading through it. The beginning of the book is genuine,engaging and empowering. The step-by-step action items will be a useful tool as they join the struggle for justice and equality.

Very well-written for all ages, though targeting girls. Excellent sections which are "applied sociology" as background to and explanation of various dimensions of activism. Concrete suggestions and explanations of "how to" various aspects of leadership, activism, and "revolution".

I wish 10 year old me could've read this book. I would be a much more self confident, self loving woman. Here's to change! ✊🏼

Amazing read. I can't wait for my 5-year old to grow up a little so I can pass it on to her. If there is a young person in your life you owe it to them, yourself, and our society to get this book in their hands. It's the next generation that is going to be the change we need.

This is a book I wish I had when I a teenager. It is clear, concise and helpful about encouraging accessible civic engagement in society. While this book is marketed towards females, it would also be a good education tool for the guys! Highly recommend!

I loved reading this! Number one I realized how much advocating I do on a daily basis with work. Number two I can’t wait to share this book with those who can use this information. This can go from young to old.

Some travel writers often forget that a guide is not about themselves; their selections and opinions do matter, but are not ultimate guidelines (a problem often found with Fodor's). This guide needs more place content, on sites, details, context, background so the user can choose; and not just restaurants, hotels and some shopping. Some descriptions are so basic and superficial that became caricatures. E. g. on the National Pantheon in Santo Domingo, “… (circa 1714) was once a Jesuit monastery and later a theater. The real curiosity here is the military guard, who stays as still as the statues, despite the schoolchildren who try to make him flinch;” or the decor of (not even recommended) Playa Blanca restaurant at Punta Cana getting about twice as much text than the whole interior of the capital’s cathedral, the most important historic building in the whole country.

Considering the author and his history, I expected the book to delve more into the actual 1%er lifestyle and belief system...much of the book seems to try to say 1%ER's are of one political persuasion or another, or at least should be...eg..., for the Occupy Wall street movement and against the Tea Party movement...the author interjects many of his personal political ideals in the book...and, as a 1%ER in a "Big 4" motorcycle club, I felt as if he believed in order to "live like an outlaw in a world gone soft" you had to be against business, in favor of big government programs and generally against conservative values...1%ER's are not of one political thought process: We are not all conservative or liberal or libertarian. Just like any other culture of people living a similar life, our beliefs are not lock stepped because we are 1%ERs...he does speak of how , over time, different societies grew young males into men,their rituals and belief systems, and how that relates to 1%ER's and how they live today, but I found it very confusing that in one chapter he speaks of being a man and standing up like one, being responsible for how you live your life, and in the next chapter he speaks of how those who have done well in life, and earned what they got, should be brought down because others haven't done as well...I have no idea how the authors belief that corporations are evil, relates to living by the 1%ER code. Many of the "insights" into the outlaw club or 1%ER world are taken from websites you can search for yourself and read virtually word for word... I do not remember a single interesting lifestyle story...I would have rated the book a one, but I gave it a 2 because at least the author doesn't spin many "made up media" stories about us.

Makes absolute sense in a World gone soft....

Interesting inside view of 1 percenter point of view but he makes them all out to be some type of heroes and I don't believe that's the case

Kinda lame. He seems to have very few of his own ideas and repeats his self continually. I think he was probably a 'wannabe' anyway.

As other reviewers have stated, this is an excellent guide for adults who have already read the Narnia books. It would be a great resource for people such as Sunday School teachers or other Christian educators who can simplify the information to make it more accessible for children. Because of the price-point to which this book is targeted, it is printed on relatively low-quality paper and in a relatively small type font, so for those reasons I downgraded my rating from a 5-star to a 4-star. Otherwise, I recommend it for all those who desire a better understanding of the Narnia series.

Wavering between 3/4: Very nice for an avid fan-- but this is for avid fans only. It's written like an encyclopedia, so you cannot read up on one character, for ex., without finding out what that character did in any one of the other series books... so read the entire series and then come back once you've memorized it all. I'm a fan, so it didn't turn me (completely) off, but it's unfortunate not to be able to share this with someone new to the series.

Mr Ford does a fantastic job covering the Chronicles. This exhaustive resource is detailed, on point, and sprinkled with the author's opinion only slightly and when appropriate. His in-depth knowledge of Lewis and other sources is one of the most remarkable features that the reader can observe from this book. Mr Ford has done his research! He also approaches the Chronicles with respect and from a Christian angle, which does justice to Lewis' writings.This is a superb "companion" to any Narnia fan, and I couldn't recommend it enough.

Dr. Paul F. Ford's "Companion to Narnia, Revised Edition" is a wonderful resource for those who wish to have a comprehensive understanding of C.S. Lewis's "Chronicles of Narnia". Everything that you come across throughout Narnia is given careful consideration, with reference to the specific page numbers in the books. I would highly recommend, to anyone who has interest in Narnia, to purchase this book.On the down-side, the actual book that I received, new from Amazon, was of decidedly poor quality. It appears to have about a half-dozen pages, in the second half of the book, that were misprinted. The lower half of these pages were originally blank. In order to rectify this problem, someone decided to physically paste the missing information onto each affected page. I suppose I would rather have the information, than not, but I wasn't exactly pleased with the condition of the book.Overall, purchasing the book would be a good investment for fans of Narnia. However, be forewarned about the quality of the book, when purchased from Amazon. It may or may not be their fault, but I normally expect a higher-quality of material than what I received from this purchase.

If you liked the Narnian series as a child- revisit it as an adult with this companion and understand the literal, moral, allegorical, and anagogical levels. There is so much more to appreciate in CS Lewis' depth and wit.

They realize they were invited to Hawaii for Steven’s birthday party, but when the TOES stops working, they help find out what went wrong. There are many different suspects along the way, but only one is correct. Who has sabotaged the TOES?Jack and the Geniuses is a science mystery book filled with inventors and inventions packed with creativity. My favorite part was when Jack, Ava, Matt, and Maya (the granddaughter of one of the suspects) venture out on a handmade boat to the middle of the sea and get stranded. They have to eat raw fish, use a jacket for toilet paper, and tap S.O.S in Morse code on a shark tracking device to get home.I give this book 5 stars because of the twists and cliffhanger ending, cool science, and the exciting feeling you get when you really want to know who did it. I think this book is good for girls and boys who are interested in mystery books and science technology. Best for ages 7+. A beautifully-wrought portrayal of Elvis Presley's transition from impressionable child to musical icon. Each page evokes the life events that gave his music the soul that made him a star. The images are memorable in a way that makes it perfect for young minds. Five stars.

Summary: This picture book biography focuses on Elvis Presley’s early years, growing up in extreme poverty in the south. From a very young age, Elvis was drawn to music, and he was surrounded by a wide range of influences. Even though his town was segregated by race and class, the music of jazz, blues, and gospel was everywhere. When Elvis was 13, his family moved from Mississippi to Memphis, and he learned to play guitar. A few years later, he managed to get a recording session with Sun Records. It was turning into a disaster, when Elvis started singing “That’s All Right”, a Delta blues song he infused with country and gospel. That song became a hit, and Elvis Presley was on his way.Pros: Kids today may see Elvis Presley as something of a joke, and this story really humanizes him, portraying him sympathetically as a nervous kid who loved music.Cons: The story ends at the beginning of Elvis’s career, which may leave the reader wanting to know more.

We borrowed this book from the library, and sadly this story fell completely flat. The story seems to be all over the map, adding superfluous details and leaving them out completely at other times.The story starts with segregation issues in the 1930's; and although an important fact, it adds simply nothing of to the actual story of the "making of the Rock 'n Roll King."The recording studio paragraph is especially confusing, as Elvis makes a record, they like his voice, but don't need a singer. Elvis comes back every week to see if they need a singer, still nothing. Suddenly, they need a singer and call Elvis (we actually had to reread the paragraph several times as we simply couldn't find the story line anymore).The lines between relevant and irrelevant details get crossed, jumped, or just ignored so many times, a potentially good story fell apart and robbed the King of his crown.It felt like a wooden roller coaster, that whips you around, going fast, then coming to a grinding halt, tossing you left and right and in the end you're merely left with a sore back and aching teeth, wishing you never got on.A good story to tell, but needs some editing and needs to be adjusted for its audience of children under 10.

A wonderful picture book about Elvis! The art work is superb. The story is concise and factual. A must for Elvis fans young and old.

Csh and tcsh are no good for shell scripting, but they're great for an interactive shell. With bash, the reverse is true. So, like reviewer Rob below, I'll just stipulate (in the legal sense) that the reviewers who panned this book for its lack of coverage of scripting didn't get it.With that out of the way---this is a nice little book. Aimed at a beginner or intermediate audience, it doesn't cover absolutely everything that can be done with the c-shell variants (that's what the man page is for), but it gives clear explanations of the interactive features that distinguish them from other command-line environments (e.g. Windows' woefully inadequate CMD.EXE). Command recall is a brilliant feature of tcsh that is covered especially well---you can bring back any command typed previously in that shell session, applying modifiers such as a Perl- or awk-like substitution operator, which could save you many minutes repeatedly typing similar commands during the course of a workday.I believe a good argument can be made for what I claimed above, that bash is markedly inferior to tcsh when used interactively; unfortunately, bash is the default shell for most (all?) Linux installs, so it's nice for Linux beginners to have a clear reference to an alternative that may work better for them.At the used price of under a dollar from many Marketplace sellers, purchase of this one should be a no-brainer.

An absolute novice might find this book useful...but the book is thin and skips a myriad of essential info for the power user. Not one of the better 'nutshell' books.

What the heck ? This book omits MOST of the commands of csh/tcsh.I later realized that I could have found this from the otherreviews, but I fundamentally DON'T understand the purpose of abook that leaves MOST of the details about csh/tcsh OUT of thebook. What is this, csh/tcsh for ignorant people who wish toremain so ? Grrrr !

A book for the basic UNIX user. Does NOT include anything about writing scripts for this shell! Worthless! Don't waste your money.Amazon likes to bury bad reviews because it negatively affects the sales of an item. When considering a product on Amazon you should ALWAYS look for the bad reviews. This will give you a more realistic impression of the quality of the product.

This book is for learning how to use the tcsh and csh shells from the command line, not for scripting. If you want scripting look elsewhere. You will be as disappointed as all of the one and two star reviewers you see here. However, in particular if you want information on the turbo C shell (tcsh), this is one of the few books on the subject, even if it is 13 years old. As with all O'Reilly books on Unix, in particular the ones written before the year 2000, this one knows its audience and has plenty of practical information. Turbo refers to speed though, not clarity. If you are not willing to memorize some shortcuts that are not exactly straightforward looking, maybe you should stick with plain old C shell (csh). The table of contents can be hard to find for this old book, so I include it next:Part I, Learning the BasicsChapter 1, Introduction, discusses the purpose of the shell and describes how to change your login shell to one of those discussed in this handbook.Chapter 2, A Shell Primer, provides a summary of introductory essentials. If you already know something about running commands, you can skim this chapter as a review or skip it.Chapter 3, Using the Shell Effectively, is an overview of many of the facilities that the shell provides to help you work more efficiently--easy, practical ways to get more out of the command line. Often, even experienced users are not aware of all of these features. This chapter gives you a glimpse of the kinds of techniques that are covered in detail in the rest of the book.Part II, Becoming More EfficientChapter 4, The Shell Startup Files, describes ~/.cshrc and ~/.login, the files that the shell uses to initialize your working environment. It's a pity that Saxby's "Practical Holography" is no longer in print. It covers a lot of ground. While the tone is frequently technical and too mathematical for the layman, this is compensated for by the numerous practical illustrations and examples.The developer and bleach formulary is excellent. While I eventually settled on D-19 rather than mixing my own developers, I have not found another bleach as satisfactory or simple as his #2 formula.The section on building your own huge plastic lenses for collimation over large plate areas remains a novel and practical approach to an ongoing problem.Go to your local library and see if they have it. If they don't have it, see if they can get this on loan for you. It's well worth the effort to read.

Message from the author: This book is not out of print. The publisher has been taken over recently by Pearson Education, and the wires may have become crossed. This is a very detailed and complete book on holography for the beginner to intermediate experimenters. Great explanations of how a laser functions, which lasers to use, optics, setups, etc.

Saxby's book is a must have for everyone involved in holography and is worth the high price. I have read several books on holography and this book is by far the best resource on practical holography.This books covers all the practical aspects of holography from setting up a holography lab to making advanced holograms.The explanations on the practical aspects are basic enough so that it can be understood by the interested layman.It also includes more in-depth sections on several aspects of holography such as a chemical analysis of developers, mathematical aspects of holography, Fourrier imaging,... which makes this book a good reference for the professional as well.The new layout of the third edition has dramatically improved the readability of the book. The third edition has been updated and includes the latest information on the new materials and laser diodes.

Further update on Practical Holography. Pearson Education, who now own Prentice-Hall, have sold the last copy , but - good news - they will reprint single copies to individual order, until the next edition comes out. I am now working on a third edition, to be published by Institute of Physics Publishing towards the end of 2002. Agfa materials are no longer available, but BB and Slavich emulsions work well with all the formulas in the 2nd Edn.

About the Editors The three editors are professionally active with many years of experience in midwifery and women's health clinical practice, education, and scholarship. Robin G. Jordan, PhD, CNM, FACNM is a certified nurse-midwife and midwifery educator. She is currently Adjunct Faculty in the Nurse-Midwifery/WHNP programs at Georgetown University. She is engaged in local and national political advocacy with a special focus on women's health and health policy. Cindy L. Farley, PhD, CNM, FACNM is a certified nurse-midwife and midwifery educator. She is currently a full time Associate Professor in the Nurse-Midwifery/WHNP programs at Georgetown University. She serves as a locum tenens midwife to two midwifery practices caring for Amish women in Ohio. Karen Trister Grace, PhD(c), MSN, CNM is a certified nurse-midwife and midwifery educator. She is currently Adjunct Faculty in the Nurse-Midwifery/WHNP programs at Georgetown University.
