About the Author
Donald Hall is an American poet, writer, editor and literary critic. He is the author of over 50 books across several genres from children's literature, biography, memoir, essays, and including 22 volumes of verse. Hall was named the fourteenth U.S. Poet Laureate in 2006 and served for one year. He is the winner of the Caldecott Medal, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and has twice been nominated for the National Book Award.

As for the story, this review says it best: "This is the kind of picture book that you can return to again and again, for as pretty as it is it's better than pretty; it's true in a way that moves children and grown-ups alike" -New York Times Book Review.I've bought so many copies of this book; I was a nanny for five years and any child who heard it fell in love with it, so of course I let each one keep it, finding a new copy each time. Then it went out of print just as I was having my first kid of my own. So I bought a used paper back copy. Then I needed yet another copy and the one that arrived that time had such peculiar, wash-out pictures, like a bad photocopy. This isn't a seller-feedback-posing-as-a-review: I'm only mentioning it because if you happen to get a copy and are underwhelmed by it, it may be that you got a bad printing. In a good printing, the colors are so rich you can practically smell the sun on the autumn leaves, the mist collecting in the hollows in the evening seem to swirl, the windows of the homes at night glow. I hadn't realized how much the pictures contribute to the whole story until I got a 'bad' copy.Hopefully, hopefully, The Ox-Cart Man comes back into print one day. I don't think I'll ever stop needing copies of this book.
This book is beautiful. I first was introduced to this book by LeVar Burton on Reading Rainbow back in the 80's. I now have a 4 year old who loves watching Reading Rainbow as much as I did. When we saw this episode it reminded me of how fascinated I was with this book when I was a kid....so I had to buy it. I think I love it more than my daughter, but she still enjoys it and thinks it is neat we got a book off of TV.
I am a 5th grade teacher and use this book in the Social Studies Economics Unit. Highly recommend. Great book to compare and contrast with Abuela's Weave. I would buy both books if you are a teacher and looking for a good lesson in economics. How are these two books similar to one another? Different? How are these main characters' lives similar and different to our own? The color, illustrations, and overall story are excellent as well. Great life lessons for children, naturally embedded into each story.
This Caldecott Award winning picture book is full of heart and homestead-grit. The Ox-Cart Man poetically demonstrates how one family works year 'round to produce income for the winter and supplies to do it all over again in the spring. Barbara Cooney's illustrations are golden! There is so much to love in poet Donald Hall's gentle telling of early homesteading days.
A timeless classic tale of life on a farm and the hard work it takes to make goods, sell them (including your cart and ox) and walk home to continue the cycle. A reminder of what early farm life looked like and it creates an appreciation for life now. My children love this story and when we are finished reading it they are inspired to create/plant something. Perfect read aloud.
Ok - I have to admit - this was one of my favorites. LOVE the amish-style graphic design work. LOVE the lesson on how to EARN money honestly with hard work. HIGHLY recommend for children of all ages. It really goes back to the original lifestyle we came from and teaches economics from the core concepts. My 7 & 8 year olds "got it" when economics were discussed after reading the book.
This is my favorite book that my children own. The story is so enjoyable, and is really inspiring in way of self-sustained living. I enjoy the pictures, and my children seem to also. It's just a sweet story, and although I don't think it sets out to do so, some lessons can be gleaned about work ethic, and the satisfaction of simple living.
This is a classic, a poem by New England great Donald Hall, and illustrated by Barbara Cooney. The story line is unisex, a great book to give parents for bedtime stories and one they will find endearing. In our days of consumerism and cheaply made, throw-away trending, we see a family and the plants and animals they raise on their small farm endure and their respect for each other as integrated parts of a whole. I bought several copies - for new babies as well as ones not even a twinkle in their daddy's eyes! I met the author many years ago when he spoke to a group of my writing students; it took him over six months to get the words just right. As we'd say now, he nailed it!
