About the Author
Mavis Gallant was born in Montreal and worked as a journalist at the Montreal Standard before moving to Europe to devote herself to writing fiction. After traveling extensively she settled in Paris, where she still resides. She is the recipient of the 2002 Rea Award for the Short Story and the 2004 PEN/Nabokov Award for lifetime achievement. New York Review Books Classics has published two previous collections of Gallant's stories, Paris Stories, selected and introduced by Michael Ondaatje (2002), and Varieties of Exile, selected and introduced by Russell Banks (2003).Jhumpa Lahiri is the author of the short-story collections Unaccustomed Earth and Interpreter of Maladies, and of a novel, The Namesake. Her interview with Mavis Gallant appeared in the summer 2009 issue of Granta.

I remember my mother speaking of Mavis Gallant as she read the author's stories in The New Yorker. She was onto a good thing that took me much longer to realize. Gallant's writing reminds me of Yates and Cheever. This collection takes us all over including Montreal, New York, and Paris. My favorites were Madeline's Birthday, Thieves and Rascals, and Bernadette. The stories are melancholy, if not sad, but there is an intriguing humour in every one of them. A word of warning, the introduction is a wonderful tribute to Gallant by Jhumpa Lahiri but is so detailed that I wished I had read it after reading the stories themselves (the title of this review is taken from that Introduction).
What an extraordinary writer ! Exquisite glimpses into characters, their lives, their times and their scenes. Can anyone write like this anymore ?No annoying preaching, gotchas, or personal intrusion....just pure, crystalline vision. Put down your "smart" phone...take a vacation fromthe trivial net of social media..... and read humane, lovely, unsentimental literature by a true master of the medium. No gimmicks...just talent.
If you're the type of reader who loves well-observed, well-drawn "slice of life" stories, this collection should prove very satisfying. Gallant's prose is excellent, even if, in my mind, the narrator of these stories was always Judi Dench. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Mavis Gallant has an uncanny ability to create and develop interesting characters within the confines of a short story. She is a master of her craft.
