to finally discover the history of my mentors mentor, Alfred Peet. For the past five years, as long as I've been a coffee roaster, I have sought after a to read such as this one about Peet. ( I learned how to taste coffees from one of Alfred Peets apprentice.) Thank you Jasper Houtman for this. I in part grew up drinking Peet's Coffee from the 80's on and now I'm a professional coffee roaster. You can't imagine how it feels to read about the legend. (Or maybe you can.) I really appreciate reading about Peet's history but my favorite sections are, Demanding Better Coffee (That's why I'm a roaster where I live), Which Coffee and What's In the French Roast? Peet's French Roast was my introduction to coffee. I liken it to drinking Guinness long before discovering other lighter Ales. It is a wonderful testimony to Alfred Peet who started it 1966 his coffee shop in Berkeley my first year there and provided us with the most wonderful that I cherish still in 2019
As the translator of this book by Jasper Houtman, I cannot recommend this book more highly. Alfred Peet was the founder of the coffee revolution in the US and his impact on Starbucks and other coffee makers in this country has been phenomenal as well as highly underrated. The book is a wonderful read and gives an honest and intriguing portrait of the Dutch-American Alfred Peet who had an unrivaled palate for tea and coffee, and a passion for quality. As most geniuses, he was not an easy man to work with and the book goes into something of a family secret that most Peet aficionados may not know about.That said, I'm sorely disappointed that the publisher didn't have the decency to send me a copy of the book once it was done. My name doesn't appear until the last page of the book, and appears incorrectly. My contract stipulated that my name was going to appear on cover and title page of the book and I want to flag this for anyone who does business with this publisher. DO NOT RECOMMEND.
I would love to read this book. However, I despise reading a translated book that does neither mention nor acknowledge the translator. From the glimpses I took I can tell it's a really good translation, but who is the translator?In honor of the translator I will return this book!
This is a very interesting book of Peet's coffee and the person that started the company. It is in the Bay Area- Berkeley, California. Learn a lot about coffee and tea. Easy to read and very interesting. Will purchase more for gifts.
